Producer Edgardo Díaz formed the Puerto Rican-based Latino boy band in the late 1970s. With Menudo (a Spanish synonym for little and, in Puerto Rican Spanish, loose change), viewers get to see how ridiculously young these boy bands can be and how vulnerable these kids are. The group incorporated choreographed dance moves inspired by fellow Motown acts. Their music featured close soul harmonies in concert with catchy pop hooks. In spite of a tragic history, The Jackson 5 sold over 100 million records and established an enduring musical mark, especially on boy band conventions. On learning the boy was self-conscious about the size of his nose, Joe Jackson began to refer to him as “Big Nose.” The Associated Press reported that Michael was so afraid of his father’s wrath that he would sometimes vomit when in the presence of the elder Jackson. Michael, the group’s lead, would endure psychological abuse in addition to physical wounds. The Guardian reported that father Joe Jackson would beat his kids with a belt, a cord, or a branch if they dared make a mistake during practice. Though the band was a smashing success, this came at a steep price. The local hit led to a contract with Motown Records the next year. They’d become a smash on the heels of their first single, Big Boy, recorded in 1968 for Steeltown Records. From the time before the youngest member, Michael was five-years-old, the brothers performed in local malls and at parties. Hailing from a rough part of town, fearsome father Joe Jackson needed a way to keep the boys from the street’s temptations.
